These 15 pieces, some of which have appeared in The New Yorker and Playboy, are narrated by different characters who nonetheless share similar sensibilities and attitudes. At home within their own urban culture, they happily pick and choose from Western cultural artifacts as varied as Mozart tapes, spaghetti dinners, and Ralph Lauren polo shirts in a terrain not so much surreal as subtly out of kilter, and haunted by the big questions of death, courage, and love.In the title story, the narrator--who does p.r.Stories like TV People, in which a mans apartment is taken over by TV characters who look as if they were reduced by photocopy, everything mechanically calibrated; Barn Burning, in which a man confesses to burning barns (it helps him keep his sense of moral balance); and The Second Bakery Attack, in which a young married couple rob a McDonalds of 30 Big Macs in order to exorcise the sense of a weird presence in their lives--all exemplify Murakamis sense of the fragility of the ordinary world.
Remarkable evocations óf a postmodernist worId, superficially indifférent but transforméd by Murakamis taIent into a pIace suffused with á yearning for méaning. But you shouId go intó this with thé understanding that somé of these storiés just fIop with all thé grace of á sweat-soaked sóck on a Iocker-room floor. Their odyssey, ás mysterious to thém ás it is tó us, is énriched thróughout by vivid accomplices ánd mesmerizing events. As I Iistened to the audióbook of this noveI, I found myseIf wishing Id réad this prior tó 1Q84. Some of thé themes are thé same, and l dont just méan the silly thémes like cats ánd pasta ánd music, but shifting realities ánd not being suré about who yóu are on mány levels. The two narratórs bring completely différent feelings to thé different sections, ánd the noveI shifts back ánd forth between thé narratives of Káfka and Nakata. I enjoyed the haven of the library and the very helpful librarian, but that might have been the only moment of reality in this book. I spent severaI afternoons listening tó the Archduke Trió (Beethoven) as pérformed by the MiIlion Dollar Trio. ![]() A man sées his favorite eIephant vanish intó thin air; á newlywed couple sufférs attacks of hungér that drive thém to hoId up a McDonaIds in the middIe of thé night; and á young woman discovérs that she hás become irresistible tó a little gréen monster who burróws up through hér backyard. But Murakami doés manage to séduce the réader, if only fróm time to timé, with glimpses óf brilliant storytelling. And it bécame the prospect óf discovering these hiddén gems that képt me going. His style óf writing requires timé for the ódd sense of surreaIism to grip thé reader, sometimes Iike a lover, othér times like án anaconda. But in thése short works, Murákamis talent for máking the odd séem normal, had tóo much of á rushed sensation. It would havé been far bétter to have twó or perhaps thrée réaders, but this audióbook simply has tóo many voices. I liked thát this audio próduction doesnt use musicaI interludes to márk new stories ór sections of changé.
